North Junior High School: Attendance Reminders
††

August, 2014
Boise School District policy requires ďstudents to arrive at school on time and to attend school regularly Ė at least†90 percent of the time school is in session during each semester.Ē Attendance is taken by class period. Parents will be notified in writing when their child exceeds the absence and/or tardy limits. †Students who exceed 9 absences in any class period or who have 6 or more tardies in any class period will need to attend Afternoon School.†

Afternoon School may be assigned for excessive absences and/or tardies. It is held periodically throughout the school year from 2:35 p.m. to 5:35 p.m. and is assigned by the Assistant Principal. Failure to attend may result in loss of credit for the class period(s) affected by the absences and/or tardies. Should additional absences and/or tardies occur in the same class after attendance at Afternoon School, the student may lose credit in the class.
HOW TO REPORT AN ABSENCE:
North parents may telephone the Attendance Line at 854-5746 at any time (24 hours a day, seven days a week) and leave a voice mail to report student absences. Please leave a message that includes your childís name, grade, the date of the absence, your name and telephone, as well as the reason for the absence. We would appreciate a call for each day of absence. You do not need to call the school attendance secretary if you call and leave this information as a recorded message. Please be sure to call the front office even if you have notified your studentís teachers and/or counselor that your student will be absent. Students who are not excused by a parent/guardian within 48 hours of an absence will be marked truant and will serve an in-house detention.
Emails will not be accepted when excusing absences or requesting PTLs.
ABSENCES:
Students who are late arriving to school must check in at the office to receive an admit pass.
A student is considered absent if they are 20 or more minutes late for a class period.†
  • Excused Absences:†Absences from school with the knowledge and approval of a studentís parent/guardian are excused absences, but such absences are counted toward the maximum of nine (9) absences allowed per semester. In order for an absence to be excused, oral or written communication from the studentís parent/guardian should be received within 48 hours of the last day of the absence, except for school approved activity absences.

If a studentís absence/tardy is medically related, please have your student bring a note from a medical professional to medically excuse the absence. Medical excuses may also be faxed to 854-5741. Absences/tardies†that are medically excused do not count toward the 90% attendance rule.
  • Unexcused Absences/Truancies:†Absences without the consent of the studentís parent/guardian or District officials are unexcused absences/truancies. Such unexcused absences include departure from school or class during the school day without the permission of District officials.†A Permit to Leave (PTL) must be obtained from the attendance office prior to a student leaving school.†If the student leaves without a PTL, the student is considered truant immediately, and the parent cannot excuse it after the fact.†It is appreciated if PTLís are called in at least 1 hour before a student needs to leave. Unexcused absences are counted toward the maximum of nine (9) absences and may be applied to a Board determination of habitual truancy.†Papers, assignments, tests, etc., missed during an unexcused absence/truancy may not receive full credit. The consequence for unexcused absences/truancies is In-House Detention, where the student remains in school, isolated from peers.†The student is considered present in school for attendance purposes.
  • Parents will be notified by letter when their student has reached 5, 8 and 10 absences in any class period.

TARDIES:
Students who are late arriving to school must check in at the office to receive an admit pass.†A student is considered†tardy†if they are less than 20 minutes late to any class period. This is the case even with a parent excuse for tardiness.†

Parents will be notified of their studentís 4th,†5th, 6th and 7th†tardies in a single class.† Students who receive 6†tardies in a class period will be assigned to Afternoon School.† Parents will be notified of their studentís 7th tardy and a Letter of Appeal for Credit must be submitted and granted for the student to receive credit in the affected class(es).† Additional tardies may result in disciplinary actions.

PERMIT TO LEAVE (PTL):
North Junior High is a closed campus. Students must have a Permit to Leave (PTL) in order to leave the school grounds during the school day. To request a PTL, please call the office at 854-5746 on the day the student needs to leave school. When calling, please try to allow at least an hour prior to the time your student needs to leave school. Parents/guardians may also send a note with your student and have them bring it to the main office. Please do not send an email to request a PTL. Students need to check in at the main office when returning from appointments that are outside the building. Upon return, please have your student bring a note from the medical professional to excuse this absence.
LUNCH:
Students may not leave campus for lunch unless they are picked up in the office by THEIR parent or guardian. Students will need a PTL to leave with their parent for lunch.
